π Click to enlargeRubus idaeus
Productive cane fruit that spreads vigorously. Excellent fresh or preserved.
Use a trellis or support canes. Prune out old canes after fruiting.
Zone Performance
In Zone 3-4, floricane (summer-bearing) types need reliable snow cover or heavy mulch to protect canes from winter kill, while primocane (fall-bearing) types can be mowed to the ground each winter and still fruit reliably the following fall. In Zone 8-9, raspberries struggle with summer heat and insufficient winter chilling, so only heat-tolerant cultivars perform well and afternoon shade is often needed.
π¦ Deer Resistance
occasionally damaged
The thorny canes offer some natural protection, but deer will still browse tender new growth and fruit when pressure is high.
π Pollinator Value
high
A major early-summer nectar source for honeybees and bumblebees, and the flowers also attract many native solitary bees.
Good Companions
Garlic β Planted along the row edge, garlic's sulfur compounds help deter aphids and Japanese beetles from raspberry canes.
Marigold β Suppresses root-knot nematodes in the soil and adds season-long pest-deterrent blooms near the planting.
Yarrow β Draws in predatory insects like lacewings and ladybugs that help control aphids on raspberry canes.
Tansy β A traditional companion known to repel Japanese beetles and ants that can otherwise farm aphids on the canes.
β οΈ Cane borers causing wilted cane tips
Prune out and destroy wilted tips several inches below the damage as soon as it's noticed.
β οΈ Spur blight or cane diseases
Thin canes to improve air circulation and remove spent floricanes immediately after fruiting.
β οΈ Uncontrolled spreading via suckers
Confine the row with buried root barriers and mow or dig out unwanted suckers each spring.
β οΈ Japanese beetles skeletonizing leaves
Hand-pick beetles into soapy water in early morning and avoid planting near heavily infested turf.
Fruit is non-toxic to cats and dogs in normal amounts.
