Zone Performance
At the cold edge (zone 5), sweetgum's fall color intensifies with cooler autumn nights but the tree can suffer occasional twig dieback in severe winters. In zone 9 at the warm edge, growth is faster and more vigorous, but the notorious spiky seed pod litter becomes a bigger nuisance issue on paved surfaces due to the longer growing season.
