Zone Performance
In zone 3-4 at the cold edge, silver maple is fully hardy and its rapid growth makes it a popular quick shade tree despite structural weaknesses. In zone 9 at the warm edge, heat and drought stress become more limiting, and the brittle wood is at higher risk from severe summer thunderstorms and hurricanes common in that range.

Plant well away from structures and have a certified arborist thin the canopy periodically to reduce wind load.

Site at least 20-30 feet from pavement, foundations, and septic lines before planting.
