π Click to enlargeQuercus palustris
Fast-growing, pyramidal oak with fine-textured leaves. One of the most widely planted street and shade trees in the US.
Tolerates wet, poorly drained soil better than most oaks. Can develop chlorosis in alkaline soil β prefers acidic conditions.
Zone Performance
In zone 4, pin oak can suffer dieback in unusually harsh winters and grows noticeably slower than farther south. In zones 7-8 at the warm edge, it performs well but is more prone to iron chlorosis where soils trend alkaline, since heat accelerates the tree's demand for iron uptake.
π¦ Deer Resistance
occasionally damaged
Young saplings can get browsed but mature trees are generally left alone once bark toughens.
π Pollinator Value
moderate
Wind-pollinated catkins offer little nectar value, but the acorns and canopy support squirrels, blue jays, and woodpeckers.
Good Companions
Christmas Fern β Tolerates the dense shade and acidic leaf litter beneath a mature pin oak's canopy.
Wild Ginger β Low, shade-tolerant groundcover that thrives in the same moist, acidic soil pin oak prefers.
Virginia Bluebells β Spring ephemeral that blooms before the oak's canopy fully leafs out, then goes dormant during peak shade.
Inkberry Holly β Shares pin oak's tolerance for wet, poorly drained clay soils in a mixed foundation planting.
β οΈ Iron chlorosis (yellow leaves with dark green veins)
Apply chelated iron soil drench or foliar spray and avoid planting in alkaline or compacted urban soil.
β οΈ Retained lower branches ('self-pruning failure') that die but don't drop
Prune dead lower limbs in late winter; this is a normal habit of the species, not disease.
β οΈ Girdling roots on trees planted too deep
Plant with the root flare visible at soil grade and remove circling roots at planting time.
Acorns and young leaves are toxic to cats and dogs in quantity (tannins) β usually low-risk from occasional acorn snacking.
Informational only β always check with a veterinarian if you suspect your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have.
