Zone Performance
Herbaceous peonies require a sustained period of winter chilling to bloom well and are reliably hardy to zone 3, but struggle badly in zone 9 and warmer where winters rarely provide enough cold hours, making them a poor choice south of zone 8 without selecting specific low-chill cultivars; at the cold end of the range, deep snow cover actually protects the crown from extreme temperature swings.

Good Companions
Catmint (Nepeta) — Its billowy blue-purple flowers and mounding habit hide peony's bare lower stems and fading foliage after bloom.
Iris — Bearded iris blooms just before or alongside peony, sharing the same full-sun, well-drained garden conditions.
Baptisia — Provides sturdy shrub-like structure and blue-toned flowers that complement peony's bloom time and needs minimal division, similar to peony's own long-lived nature.
Alliums — Their globe-shaped flowers rise above peony foliage on bare stems, adding vertical interest without shading the peony crown.
Troubleshooting
⚠️ Plants fail to flower for years after planting
Check planting depth — peony eyes should be no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface, since planting too deep is the most common cause of bloom failure.
⚠️ Botrytis blight causing blackened buds and stems in wet spring weather
Cut affected stems back to healthy tissue and clean up all fallen debris in fall to reduce overwintering spores.
⚠️ Heavy double blooms flopping over after rain
Install peony rings or hoop supports in early spring before growth fills in.

No treatment is needed — the ants are harmless and simply feeding on the sweet nectar peony buds secrete.
