Zone Performance
In zone 7 at the cool edge of its perennial range, corms can often overwinter in the ground with a heavy mulch layer in milder years but are at risk in a hard freeze, so many gardeners still lift them as insurance. In zones 10-11, corms remain in the ground year-round and can naturalize, but should be divided every couple of years as clumps become congested.

Troubleshooting
⚠️ Thrips causing streaked, distorted flowers
Apply insecticidal soap at first sign of damage and remove and destroy heavily infested foliage after bloom.
⚠️ Tall spikes flopping over
Stake individually or plant in blocks where neighboring stems provide mutual support, and plant corms slightly deeper in loose soil.
⚠️ Corms rotting in storage over winter
Cure corms in a warm, dry, well-ventilated spot for 2-3 weeks before storing in mesh bags in a cool, dry location around 40-50°F.
⚠️ Pet Safety
Toxic to cats and dogs, concentrated in the corm (colchicine-like compounds) — can cause serious GI upset.
