π Click to enlargeGinkgo biloba
Ancient, remarkably pest- and disease-resistant tree with fan-shaped leaves that turn brilliant gold in fall.
Plant only male cultivars β female trees produce foul-smelling fruit. Extremely tolerant of urban pollution and poor soil.
Zone Performance
At the cold edge (zone 3), ginkgo is fully hardy and shows excellent fall color, though growth is notably slower than in warmer zones. Toward zone 8 at the warm edge, it tolerates heat, pollution, and poor soil exceptionally well, making it one of the most reliable street trees across its entire range regardless of zone.
π¦ Deer Resistance
rarely damaged
Ginkgo's unique leaf chemistry, unchanged for millions of years, is highly unpalatable to deer and virtually pest-free overall.
π Pollinator Value
low
Wind-pollinated with no showy flowers, offering minimal direct pollinator value, though it provides structural habitat for birds.
Good Companions
Hosta β Shade-tolerant perennial well suited to the light, open dappled shade a mature ginkgo casts.
Japanese Forest Grass β Fine-textured ornamental grass that complements ginkgo's distinctive fan-shaped foliage in shade borders.
Astilbe β Tolerates the same well-drained, urban-tolerant conditions ginkgo thrives in near sidewalks and courtyards.
Boxwood β Classic formal underplanting that softens the tall, upright silhouette of a mature ginkgo specimen.
β οΈ Foul-smelling fruit from female trees
Always purchase a named male cultivar such as 'Autumn Gold' or 'Princeton Sentry' to avoid fruiting entirely.
β οΈ Very slow establishment period after transplanting
Be patient and provide consistent watering for the first 2-3 years; growth rate increases once established.
β οΈ Sparse, awkward branching in young trees
Light structural pruning in the early years helps develop a fuller, more balanced canopy over time.
The fleshy seed coat on female trees is mildly toxic and has an unpleasant smell/taste that usually deters pets on its own.
Informational only β always check with a veterinarian if you suspect your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have.
