π Click to enlargeCalamagrostis Γ acutiflora
Tall, upright grass with feathery golden plumes. One of the most versatile ornamental grasses.
Cut back to 4β6 inches in late winter before new growth emerges. Very low maintenance.
Zone Performance
At the cold edge of its range (zone 4), the sterile cultivar 'Karl Foerster' is the most reliable choice and returns dependably each spring. In the warmer zones 8-9, plants may go semi-dormant or brown out earlier in hot, dry summers, and the straight species (not 'Karl Foerster') can self-seed aggressively, so sterile cultivars are strongly preferred there.
π¦ Deer Resistance
seldom damaged
The stiff, upright blades are not a preferred deer food, though occasional light browsing can occur in areas with heavy pressure.
π Pollinator Value
low
As a wind-pollinated grass it produces no showy flowers or nectar, though its seed heads provide some winter forage for songbirds.
Good Companions
Black-Eyed Susan β Golden daisy-like blooms echo the tawny color of the grass's feathery plumes and share the same sunny, average-soil conditions.
Purple Coneflower β Its upright purple-pink flowers provide strong color contrast against the narrow vertical form of the grass.
Sedum 'Autumn Joy' β Blooms at the same late-summer time as the grass's plumes and shares similarly low maintenance needs.
Russian Sage β Both have a strict upright, non-flopping habit that reads well in formal or repeated mass plantings.
β οΈ Flopping or splaying clumps
Grow in full sun and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, which produces weak, lax growth; stake temporarily if a summer storm flattens the clump.
β οΈ Rust-colored spots on leaf blades
Improve air circulation by dividing crowded clumps and avoid overhead watering late in the day.
β οΈ Unwanted seedlings spreading nearby
Plant only sterile cultivars such as 'Karl Foerster' or 'Overdam' rather than the species form.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Informational only β always check with a veterinarian if you suspect your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have.
