Zone Performance
Chives are cold-hardy across their entire Zone 3-10 range and go fully dormant in winter everywhere north of Zone 8, dying back to the ground and returning reliably each spring. In the warmest Zone 9-10 gardens they stay evergreen or nearly so through winter, giving gardeners there several extra months of harvest compared to colder zones.

Troubleshooting
⚠️ Clumps becoming sparse, woody, and less productive after several years
Dig and divide the clump into smaller sections every 2-3 years in early spring or fall and replant with fresh compost.
⚠️ Rust showing as orange pustules on leaf blades
Remove affected leaves promptly, avoid overhead watering, and improve air circulation around the clump.
⚠️ Onion thrips causing silvery streaking on leaves
Spray foliage with a strong jet of water to dislodge thrips and follow with insecticidal soap if the infestation persists.
